First Aid level 1 equips candidates with the basic principles of assessing an emergency situation, contacting the emergency services as quickly as possible and while awaiting their arrival, candidates will be able to perform basic skills required to sustain life. Learners will be able to understand the laws of first aid, including the principles of emergency care, demonstrate an understanding of emergency scene management, treat wounds and arrest bleeding, know the first aid required for different injuries, utilise the correct equipment and safety precautions when administering first aid, understanding potential hazards in the work environment, performing cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and respond to cyanide poisoning (optional component for gold mining operations)
Theoretical and Practical Assessments
The course will enable learners to provide primary emergency care (first aid) in response to an occupational risk induced or any health emergency. Upon completion of the course, the successful learner will be able to demonstrate the principles of primary emergency care, assess and control a single injury emergency scene in the workplace, demonstrate primary emergency life support for adults, children and infants, explain and manage shock, carry out secondary assessment of the sick or injured person and provide appropriate primary emergency care at the scene and keep records of the incident/accident.
Theoretical and Practical Assessments
The course will enable the first responder to react to emergencies at an advanced first aid level, until the arrival of more professional emergency personnel. Upon completion of the course, the successful learner will be capable of explaining the principles of advanced first aid in emergencies, demonstrating an advanced level of preparedness to deal with sudden illness or emergency, assessing and managing an emergency scene/disaster, describing the anatomy and explaining the physiology of the human body systems in terms of injury or sudden illness, applying primary first aid for all age groups according to accepted current first aid protocols, explaining and managing shock.
