This qualification is a broad, entry-level qualification for persons wishing to make a career in the emergency services especially fire and rescue.
Learners who have achieved this qualification will have a range of foundational competencies relating to emergency service; fire fighting, rescue operations, victim care, and protection of property and the environment, as well as generic skills in workplace processes. This foundation will enable learners to proceed to Level 5 and beyond, in a selected specialized route or career pathway in the context of emergency services.
Fire services and other emergency processes have developed according to different standards and under different bodies, ranging from municipal councils to the South African National Defence Force (SANDF). This qualification aims to establish common standards at entry-level.
Learners who complete this qualification will be recognized as competent emergency services operators employable within various public as well as in the private sectors under supervision.
Theoretical and Practical Assessments
This qualification is intended for persons who are working at a supervisory level, or intending to work in supervisory level within the emergency services.
The qualification recognises the competencies of people who have the responsibility of performing management and supervisory functions relating to emergency services in the context of fire and rescue including risk and hazard identification at operational incidents.
It will enable learners to take charge in incidents in the workplace in order to make tactical spontaneous decisions. Learners will be provided with competencies to lower risks and mitigate negative circumstances thus increasing safety for the individual and the broader community. Learners completing this qualification will be able to conduct basic fire safety inspections, risk assessment fire investigations, and pre-incident planning using applicable legislation and evaluate safety plans. This qualification can further employment and/or advancement to a supervisory position in the fire and rescue operations environment and provides learners with knowledge and skills in meeting a range of emergency, fire and rescue needs. The qualifying learner will be able to supervise and coordinate the effective use of resources in the workplace.
Theoretical and Practical Assessments
An NQF Level 4 learning approach to teaching the learner the principles of firefighting. On completion of the course, the successful learner will be capable of identifying, containing, preventing, and extinguishing different types of fires by operating firefighting equipment.
